I have lived in Derbyshire for most of my life, and now live near Derby. The beautiful landscapes of the Peak District are the main source of inspiration for me, as well as the more gentle farm landscapes and woods near Derby. I walk almost every day in these places and know their moods and seasons very well. I have a purpose built studio in my garden which is the perfect base, as it is quiet and it is there for me at all times. Work in the studio is balanced with drawing and painting out of doors. Usually I draw a subject on location in detail, sometimes returning to the same place more than once, before transferring the drawing to canvas on a larger scale and then painting it in the studio. Years of walking nearly every day have convinced me that walking in natural surroundings helps me to be mentally and physically well. I want my paintings to have the same effect on people, to make them feel they are outdoors enjoying the beauty of nature. I try to give the paintings the same emotional quality that I feel when I am in those landscapes – the emotional content of the paintings is as important as the depiction of a place. I have a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Bristol; a Post Graduate Certificate in Fine Art from Derby University, and an Adult Teaching Certificate. My paintings are sold through exhibitions and my website. I have fulfilled commissions for public venues and schools, and I am an experienced teacher of drawing and painting.
